Hubert (Hubie for short) , never let on to his true feelings of dejected disdain over landing second place in the great annual pigeon races. When you spend 364 days training hard, eating only the top seed mixes and rejecting all of the human food waste down at the local bins, you’re sights are on first place and that star of excellence. He simply buried those feelings deep down when he accepted his badge of merit for coming in second place, acted perfectly birdish during the post-race media frenzy. But he did happen to outstretch his right leg, at the very moment that Bean was receiving her flowers, and despite Bean only briefly mis-stepping, she gracefully regained her balance and stepped up to the podium. It happened so fast you would not be faulted for missing it. But Hubie vows to double, triple down on his training so that next year, next year, all of the glory will be his.
